Letter from the Dean – June/July edition

Greetings to you all,
Many people have been asking me two fundamental questions mainly:
* 1. How it feels like to be a Dean?
* 2. What is your policy?
Well, my answers are simple ones:
I feel humble to have being considered to become
your Dean. But I see myself more as a Pastor and
a Deacon than a Dean.
Christian service begins in gratitude, we are privileged
to share Christ’s life work. At the heart of that
work is making Christ known. It has nothing to do
with self-promotion, but all to do with grace.
That fundamental mystery beyond human
understanding, the mystery at the heart of all that is,
God made known in Christ. To make him known
comes as a gift and not a matter of human
achievement, and so it is nothing but a privilege.

Ministry is a life of gratitude to God, lived and offered for others through Christ for Christ. I see this appointment as a functional post not a title. The only status we have in the church is “our nearness to God”. I am looking forward to many years of serving you and together we will take this parish to a level where it has never been before. I believe we must have a turnaround strategy and plan of action. We cannot be doing things in the same old way and expect different results.
As a Cathedral we need to have a mission and vision statement, which I am in the process of drawing up and also consulting the strategic team. I am excited about the prospect of growing the church and the build up towards Back to church Sunday (BTCS). As your vicar I am fully behind these initiatives that you are taking to grow the church.
We need to be an inviting and welcoming church and we must master our unique selling point(USP).
Answering the second question, I have no personal policy but I embrace the Canons and Constitution as well as the Diocesan rules and regulations and Pastoral guidelines of ACSA. I subscribe to an open door policy and am prepared to learn and serve the parish.
• I believe in team ministry and have a strong pastoral care.
• My vision is to build a strong united Christian community.
• My vision is to have a maintenance program for our buildings and cathedral grounds.
• To make the parish self-sustainable and to encourage people to have a clear understanding of the modern economy.
• To have a strong social and health issues desk, including advocacy.
• The training and equipping of the people of God
As a team I believe we can achieve a lot and the Lord will bless us richly.
Ascension greetings,
Fr Lazarus Mohapi
